What is an Expert Advisor? (EA vs signals)

By Aiobot · Oct 6, 2026

An Expert Advisor (EA) is a program written for MetaTrader and stored under MQL5/Experts. Unlike an indicator, it can send, modify, and close orders if AutoTrading is allowed. Forex “signals” and copy trading are a different product: they copy someone else’s tickets or messages. An EA can be fully automatic, semi-automatic, or a risk/panel helper that still waits for you to click. Aiobot is an offline MT5 .ex5 with Guard and Promax — not a signal channel and not MT4.

What is an Expert Advisor in MetaTrader?

An Expert Advisor (EA) is an MQL program that lives in the terminal’s Experts folder (MQL5/Experts on MetaTrader 5). After you attach it to a chart, it can — if you allow algorithmic trading — open, modify, and close orders, or sit idle until you use its panel.

It is not the same as a chart indicator. Indicators calculate and draw; they do not send trades by themselves.

First copy of a file onto a chart is a HowTo of its own: install Aiobot on MT5. If the name never appears, see EA not showing / AutoTrading disabled.

How is an EA different from an indicator?

Expert Advisor Indicator
Folder Experts Indicators
Can place orders Yes, if AutoTrading and the Common tab allow it No
Typical job Rules, risk, execution, panels Lines, arrows, oscillators

An EA may still draw boxes or lines (a panel). Drawing does not make it a signal feed.

How is an EA different from forex signals or copy trading?

Signals / Telegram / WhatsApp alerts tell you (or a copier) what to do. Copy trading and the MetaTrader Signals marketplace mirror another account’s tickets. Those products need a feed or a leader account.

An EA runs inside your terminal. It does not have to call a vendor server. Some EAs do phone home; that is a design choice, not the definition.

Aiobot’s license is checked inside the .ex5. Live, real, and prop logins need the 24-character key; demo does not. The EA does not call Aiobot servers. Details: demo versus live license.

This page is not a signals hub and not a “best EA 2026” list.

Does an EA have to place trades automatically?

No. Three common shapes:

  1. Full auto — the code fires entries from its own rules.
  2. Semi-auto — you confirm; the EA sizes or routes the ticket.
  3. Helper — risk caps and chart tools; you still choose the setup.

Automatic is not the same as profitable. An EA can also lose, freeze, or sit quiet if AutoTrading is off.

How does Aiobot fit this definition?

Aiobot is a MetaTrader 5 Expert Advisor (aiobot.ex5) with the Guard risk engine and the Promax chart panel. Guard enforces numbers you type; Promax helps with lot, sessions, and orders. Neither is a signal service.

There is no MT4 build. Platform differences: MT5 versus MT4.

Aiobot does not promise profit and does not sell trade alerts.
